Leaving the City - Pathogen

PATHOGEN - LEAVING THE CITY by PATHOGEN music

OVERVIEW

A deep, atmospheric rolling drum and bass track that oozes atmosphere and emotion. Pathogen certainly takes us on a journey into the soul with this track.

MIXDOWN

The mix on this track is really nice. It's simple, so doesn't engulf the listener maybe as much as we would like, but it's certainly clean enough to stand up to any tracks a DJ might want to mix it with. Drums are solid and punch just enough to help give the track some power. Would have liked to have heard a little more bright shimmer to the hats in this track, and maybe a touch more high end throughout. Just lacks a little sparkle. Mid ranges are nice and crunchy, and the low end sits well enough in the mix too.

ORIGINALITY

Pathogen has managed to combine a very liquid vibe with some undertones of grit and nastyness, making this track stand out quite well. A pretty original concept. I would certainly struggle to catagorise this into any sub genre!.

SOUND DESIGN

Some of the sounds in this track are beautiful, the composition of the deep piano, along with the sound effects like the rain and hustle and bustle within the intro work wonderfully together and really help set a mood for the track. The bass is your typical reece kinda sound but fits well into the style of track that this is. As i spoke briefly about earlier, the drums are solid. The kick and snare especially, with both punching hard into your soul! There are some nice synth melodies throughout which also help evolve the track on it's path.

STRUCTURE

A very solid creation from Pathogen. All the drops are in the right places, the track rolls along very smoothly, and the added dirt into the second drop really helps the diversity of the track. I think a DJ would have no problems putting this into a set.

Morning Rise - Suburban Filth

Morning Rise by Suburban Filth

OVERVIEW

An extremely melodic "fun" drum and bass track from Suburban Filth focusing on the lighter side of the usually dark genre.

MIXDOWN

A nice clean mix all round in this track. I would specifically like to draw attention to the clarity of the drum work. They sound extremely clean and punchy, like a breath of fresh air. The higher, louder piano plucks could do with bringing down a touch as they are a db or two too loud, whereas the lower piano sounds sit perfectly. The bass is nice, could maybe do with a bit more body to it but it's not too bad as it is. Overall a nice mix that would sound better with a touch more low end.

ORIGINALITY

I'm finding this track to be quite original, the melodies used, and the atmosphere created is very relaxed and soothing. I can sense an element of trance within the track mainly due to the gated riffs that come in sequentially, which I'm not a huge fan of, but each to their own.

SOUND DESIGN

The melodic piano sounds are beautiful, they really do create an air of relaxation and emotion, and Suburban Filth has taken his productions to the next level with that crystal clear drum work. Bass is simple yet effective. The only thing I can criticise in sound design is those gated synth's, I'm just not feeling them at all. But I would also put that down to personal preference, I'm sure there's listeners out there that will love them!

STRUCTURE

As solid as they come! Everything hits and stops when it should, theres the right amount of intro, right amount of drop and right amount of everything to make this track work in any drum and bass set out there.

The Journey - JukeMaluke

The Journey by JukeMaluke

OVERVIEW

A techy drum and bass track that offers morphing sounds and a new outlook to the genre. JukeMaluke is a relatively new producer, having been at it for only a month.

MIXDOWN

Unfortunately the mix is all over the place. I put this down to merely the lack of experience JukeMaluke has under his belt as a producer. The levels are all out, the big warping bass drowns out almost all of the drums. We can hardly notice a kickdrum at all, and the snare sounds like it's fighting for it's life. I'd suggest that JukeMaluke spends a little time focusing on how to EQ correctly, as some simple surgical EQ work would do wonders for the track.

ORIGINALITY

I find that most new producers are pretty original, I was the same when first starting out. They havn't conformed to a specific genre, or the rules that each genre brings with it. Thus bringing something new and original to the table. And this track is no exception. I wouldnt be able to catagorise it, but if I were to try I'd slot it into the techy drum and bass file.

SOUND DESIGN

Taking into consideration the lack of experience JukeMaluke has, the actual sound design and manipulation is pretty good, and for only a month of producing I can tell once he has more knowledge, we can expect some pretty big things to come out of his studio. The bass wobbles are nice, and with some clever EQ work could be moulded into something great. They just need taming down a little, and cleaning up.

STRUCTURE

Unfortunately, again due to lack of experience, the structure is a little off. It's not terrible by any standards, but it could be improved. There's enough for a DJ to be able to slot it into, and out of a mix without too much worry though.

Aftermath - HYQXYZ

Aftermath by HYQXYZ

OVERVIEW

A tearing neurofunk drum and bass track with an element of an oriental background to boot. HYQXYZ takes us deep into his mind with this non stop action track.

MIXDOWN

Really can't fault it. The mix is spot on. Everything punches through so cleanly and sharply. All elements sit together in the frequency range perfectly and the drums hit hard like a heavyweight. If I was trying to pick at it, I'd say it could do with a bit more dynamics. Well, the hi hats could anyway, the rest of the track is perfect. I really cannot find fault at all.

ORIGINALITY

As most neurofunk drum and bass is pretty original, it's difficult to discuss the originality of this track on it's own. However, the bass work is fantastic and definately deserves an honourable mention when it comes to originality. But I'll go into more detail in the sound design section of the review.

SOUND DESIGN

Amazing......period! Thats all I can say! The time that must have gone into creating this track is crazy. The bassline is so clean yet so gritty and powerful it simply astounds me. The atmospheric elements which lend an oriental flavour to the track are also second to none, building an emotional hold over the listener. I'm gonna say that I am really impressed with this track throughout.

STRUCTURE

A good structure to the track with builds and drops where they should be. However, throughout the second drop there are a few glitched, choppy, stutter moments which sound amazing within the track, but may cause headaches for a DJ trying to mix at this point. But most DJ's are good enough to not lose focus so it shouldn't cause too much heartache.

KRONIX RATING - 9 / 10

Maneuvers - Dead Noise System

Maneuvers by Dead Noise System by Dead Noise System

OVERVIEW

The Dead Noise System take us on a deep, soulful underground journey with this super dark underground dubstep number.

MIXDOWN

A fairly good mix, most of the sounds come through clearly and cleanly without problem. There is a nice range of frequencies all shining through and each element seems to have it's own space in the mix. If anything I think the mix is a little too bright, maybe the higher frequencies could be tamed down a little to let us focus on those lovely deep bass sounds that are sitting underneath.

ORIGINALITY

Plenty of original dark sinister sounds in this one to keep the avid listener entertained. If you are a fan of the more commercial side of dubstep then this is definately NOT for you. Theres none of those screeching wobbles and glitched up vocals here. This is for the hardcore dubstep fan, the fan that likes it dark and deep. This is as underground as it gets!

SOUND DESIGN

The sounds used in this track are insane! The guys at Dead Noise System have really pulled out all the stops with this. The bass is enough to turn your rib cage inside out, and the echoes and delays that pan around the track engulf the listener in a barrage of audio sensuality! There is a touch too much reverb and delay on everything for my taste, but I know the guys at DNS love a bit of verb n delay so who am I to argue?

STRUCTURE

A top solid structure for a track, there's some subtle hats in the intro so any DJ can get the timing down, and the drops and breaks happen on point too so this track is in DJ Heaven. would fit perfectly into any deep dubstep set. And as DNS are also a group of DJ's, you can be sure that this info is correct, they would have made this to be mixed with!

Memories - Evermind & Czeknology

Evermind & Czeknology - Memories by evermind

OVERVIEW

An energetic, commercial drum and bass sound that oozes character and life. An energy builder if ever I heard one.

MIXDOWN

The mix needs quite a bit of work in this track, which is a shame because there are a lot of good ideas here. The main bass lfo that continues throughout the track is pretty ear piercing, I'd suggest low passing a little off the top end of the frequencies, and tame it in a little by making it a touch mono. Also, I feel like it is maybe an octave too high and would be beneficial if it were lowered an octave. Drums sound nice and crisp, but they don't punch through the mix anywhere near as much as they should. I also think the whole track is a little too bright. Theres not much low end or low mid frequencies, everything is relying on the high's too much.

ORIGINALITY

It's a really nice concept of a track and if it had a better mix, it would sit wonderfully on a commercial compilation cd. Original? not so much. But there are some very good ideas in here to make it stand up with the rest. The vocals give it a touch of flare and work well with the style of track.

SOUND DESIGN

Like I touched upon before, there are some really nice ideas in here. The actual sound design could do with some improvement. Not so much the actual sounds, but the moulding of those sounds. Clearly Evermind has the skill and knowledge to create good sounds from a synth, but I feel he needs to take some time learning how to fine tune and craft those sounds, moulding them into a cleaner, more educated sound. The drums are ok, nothing to shout about but they do the job. A little thin and as usual, I would like them to have a little more body to them but I'm starting to realise that I'm just finicky when it comes to drums.

STRUCTURE

A well built track, that would sit well in any commercial mix. Drops and breaks happen when they should and no sudden glitches or stutters that could throw a mix off guard.

A New World - Cartel

A new world by DJCartel

OVERVIEW

A very deep minimal drum and bass liquid roller focusing on ambient, rolling beats with a touch of light melody to sooth away your blues.

MIXDOWN

Not a bad mix at all, everything sounds nice and smooth. I do notice later on in the track some clipping issues however it's difficult to decipher the culprit of the problem. I believe the mix could have been a touch brighter, maybe a small boost around the 5 - 10 khz range just to help the track shine. Also, I feel the bass is maybe a db or two too loud in the mix, it's just ever so slightly overpowering the rest of the track, but apart from that there's not much else to pick out. Drums sound pretty standard, and the snare sounds like it's struggling to break through as much as we would have liked.

ORIGINALITY

I find myself quite sucked in to the deep ambience of this track. Although it is your typical bog standard liquid roller with all the elements we have come to expect from such a sub genre, DJ Cartel has managed to breath some new life into the catagory with the arrangement. Although they are tried and tested elements, the arrangement sounds very fresh and new.

SOUND DESIGN

There are some very nice sounds in this track that sit underneath the main aspects. You have to listen quite carefully to hear them all, but they are there! The vocal sample that is used is nice, but it's what Cartel has done to it that really brings it to my attention. The atmosphere that the vocal adds to the track is fantastic and I couldn't fault it if I wanted to. There's a piano sound that flows throughout the track that sits well and helps the track evolve, provoking emotion and atmosphere.
Drums are your typical drum and bass liquid roller kind of beats, nothing groundbreaking or new, but they do what they are supposed to. I just wish that snare was a little cleaner!

STRUCTURE

A solid structure in this track, no random intervals or breaks in the track that are unexpected that could cause heartache to a DJ. A very fluent motion from start to end and a track that would fit wonderfully into any liquid drum and bass set.

KRONIX RATING - 7 / 10

Headless Housefly - Psychoholic & Trefox

Psychoholic & Trefox - Headless Housefly by PsychoholicMedia

OVERVIEW

This is drum and bass like you've never heard it before! An ecclectic array of mind bending, tripped out sounds take you on a journey to places you never knew existed.

MIXDOWN

The mix isn't too bad on this track, there are a lot of low midrange sounds going on, and at times I would've liked a little more clarity at the top end. I think the long, reverbed string section overpowers the drums quite dramatically, and I'm sure this is due to the strings taking up so much of the frequency range. Some crafty notch EQ work on the strings would sort that out no problem.
The drums are ok, although I feel the kick is a little sub heavy. All other elements seem to work well together.

ORIGINALITY

By far one of the most original tracks I've heard in quite some time. I'm a huge fan of drum and bass, but I can't remember the last time I heard it in such a tripped out way. Psychoholic & Trefox have flipped the boundaries of the genre on it's head, to the point where I certainly wouldn't be able to catagorise this into a sub genre!

SOUND DESIGN

Such a collection of trippy sounds needs some serious thought when it comes to design. Being able to create these kind of sounds is one thing, getting them to all work well together is another, and Psychoholic & Trefox have managed to do both, with astounding results. Although I do feel they spent so much time on the eccentric sounds, that they may have let slip on the drum work, as I can hear a couple of bog standard breaks rolling along, and the main beat isn't near the clarity I would've liked.

STRUCTURE

I'm honestly not sure about this bit, I mean, everything seems to fit and work well, but I'm so engrossed in the tripped out flavour of the track that my brain is struggling to process any rules of structure. I think as a singular track it works amazingly, definately take you on a journey. But in a mix? I think it'd be a DJ's nightmare!

My Lov3 - Ton3r

ton3r - my lov3 (SpinninRecords Talent Pool) by ton3r_mixin

OVERVIEW

A classic house four to the floor beat that will keep any house head happy until the early hours Get ready to dance the night away!

MIXDOWN

From what I can hear it sounds to me like the track is very narrow in the dynamic field. As if most of the elements are centered and static. This track needs a breath of life into it via some clever panning and stereo seperations. There are a few muddyness issues around the 400-500hz range that are dulling the track down quite badly and as a result, the higher end frequencies are struggling to shine as brightly as we would like them to.

ORIGINALITY

I can't go too in depth here as House music isn't really my forte, to me most of it sounds the same so describing originality is pretty difficult. I can say that I really dig the vocal hook and the melodies work well to keep me interested.

SOUND DESIGN

There are some really nice pad and synth sounds going on in the background of this track, but I cannot hear them clearly enough to give a detailed description on sound design. All of the elements are your typical house style sounds so I can safely say that people who are into house music will definately dig this.

STRUCTURE

About as solid as it gets. a good rythym from the off so it's super DJ friendly. Everything seems to happen when it should (as far as I know) lots of new elements come in throughout the track and the listener is easily lead from one stage to the next.

Maximum Pulse - Cloudburst Music

Maximum Pulse by Cloudburst Music

OVERVIEW

Cloudburst takes us on a neurofunk style drum and bass journey with this latest piece so be prepared for those typical morphing warping bass sounds.

MIXDOWN

The mixdown on this track is certainly clean. With every sound sitting neatly in it's own space in the spectrum. I'm actually surprised how clean it is considering the amount of midrange sounds there are within the track. Must have been quite the feat, fitting them in to the mix.
To me the drum rythym is spot on, a real driving source for the track, I just wish that snare would punch through a little more!

ORIGINALITY

For me, Neurofunk D&B is a very elusive sub genre of drum and bass, and a lot of producers are striving to achieve these sounds. So I think almost every neuro style track I hear is pretty original in it's own unique way, and this track is no different. It hits you with those mid ranged sweeping frequency basses that seem to have no direct movement, yet somehow manage to create the most amazing hooks!

SOUND DESIGN

The basses used in this sub genre take a lot of time to fine tune and craft, so I certainly take my hat off to Cloudburst on this track. Not only that, but it's the way he has managed to get them all warping together, and still sound individual that impresses me. There are other sounds within the track that I could talk about, but to me, none of them match the clarity, and sheer power of the bassline!
I've already touched on the drums, but to reiterate, the actual rythym and pattern of them is fantastic and really help's push the track forward, but part of me wishes they had a little more oomph to them. They sound quite squashed, not sure if they've been over compressed to account for the bassline? Would have liked them to sound a little wider, with a little more dynamic range to them.

STRUCTURE

There's a drum beat from the off, so any DJ wanting to drop this would be happy, although they would have to get it in quick, as that beat drops out pretty quick to make way for the build to the 1st drop! There's a couple of halftime switch up's throughout the track which add some diversity to it, I'm not sure how a DJ would feel about those parts, but theres plenty of track either side of those bits to mix in or out of accordingly.

Chainmaker - Cartel

Cartel - Chainmaker by DJCartel

OVERVIEW

A minimal style, techy drum and bass number with lots of  suspense and emotion. DJ Cartel has definately pushed the boundaries with this one.

MIXDOWN

I honestly cannot really fault this one, everything sounds superb, Great space in the mix, fantastic dynamic range, lots of atmosphere and it punches hard where it needs to! Drums are heavy, but not too overpowering. The raspy bass sits wonderfully on top of the sub bass with no muddyness what so ever. Top production right here.

ORIGINALITY

This is also a pretty original piece. As it begins I was expecting something very laid back and relaxed, but the drop certainly made me sit up and take notice! It wasn't what I was expecting at all! (which in this day and age of electronic music, is a good thing!) The drum work is pretty average run of the mill drum and bass beats, nothing new or groundbreaking there (that's not saying they're bad! far from it) but I think because of the basic dnb deat, it helps the other more dynamic sounds come out more!

SOUND DESIGN

Where do I begin?! The warping raspy bass that morph's in and out is so pleasing to the ear that I actually forgot I was writing a review! There's so much going on, yet it still manages to maintain the essence of minimalistic drum and bass without sounding cluttered. You can hear that almost every sound in there has been painstakingly hand crafted with care and passion. Great work.

STRUCTURE

I find myself saying the same thing for most tracks in this section of the review, but I guess what else can you say? If the structure is solid, and the track works well for DJ's then what more can be added? Same goes for this track, good structure, built well, DJ Friendly and portrays a journey throughout.

KRONIX RATING - 8.5 / 10

Vertigo - Hirca

Hirca - Vertigo (Original Mix) by kronixreviewblogtracks

OVERVIEW

A deep liquid drum and bass track with a heavy rolling bassline and subtle melodic influences that create a picture of warmth for the listener.

MIXDOWN

Not a bad mixdown, I've certainly heard worse. But there are a few noticable mishaps, such as the deep rolling reece bass. Although it sounds nice, I cant help but feel it's slightly overpowering the track. I think maybe a db or two lower would help it sit more comfortably within the mix, it also sounds quite wide, maybe some slight mono'ing of that chaneel would also benefit the track greatly.

ORIGINALITY

Another liquid roller that meets all the criteria for the sub genre. Reece basses, piano's and strings in abundance. There's nothing groundbreaking about this track, but for the people who love this genre they'll be pleased with it.

SOUND DESIGN

The reece bass is the standout sound from this track (mainly because I feel it is the loudest), it's a nice sound. My trouble with this though, is that it is a very simple sound to create, and taking the bass out of the eqation, any other sounds within the track are pads and piano's which could easily be samples so I can't really comment any further on the sound design of the track as a whole. The drums sound nice and tight, crisp and clean. But they also sound a little low ( I think this is due to the loudness of the bassline). All the elements are there, and they all work well together, it's just a shame all the elements are simple. But hey, sometimes simple is better huh? don't try and fix something that isn't broken I guess.

STRUCTURE

The building blocks of this track are great. The drops happen when they should, and the breakdowns come in at the appropriate moments. Certainly a DJ friendly track that would be easy to mix. No sudden fake drops or double drops, everything working on the 16-32 bar rule means it flows with absolute ease from start to end.

KRONIX RATING - 6 / 10

Give Dem Me - Crypticz

Crypticz - Give Dem Me [Unsigned] by Crypticz

OVERVIEW

This is bass like you never heard it before. Crypticz pulls out all the stops to make this a bass heavy satisfying journey for the listener with lots of fx and trippy sounds.

MIXDOWN

Everything sounds pretty clean this end, lots of space in the mix to let each individual element through nicely. Dynamics of the track are solid too, sounds feel like they are surrounding me, engulfing me into the track. The Bass sounds are extra clean and smooth and really rumble your chest on the right systems. All in all, a real solid production.

ORIGINALITY

I can't comment too much on the originality of the track, as "Bass" music isn't something I'm too clued up on. From what I do know, I'd still class this track as dubstep as it has that feel about it, especially with the beats. But who am I to decide what genre this should be?

SOUND DESIGN

The bass sounds in this track are immense! so deep, yet have plenty of harmonics to be heard on all systems. The drum work is good too, although  I feel slightly let down by the constant open hats that tend to get a little repetative throughout the track. Apart from that, the sound design in this track is right up there with the best of 'em! solid, dynamic and full!

STRUCTURE

This track has a good structure to it, with cymbals straight from the off in the intro, which is a godsend for DJ's. Lots of little subtle effects and vocal snips throughout to keep the listener interested too which is good, as I found the main elements may be repetative for some people.

KRONIX RATING - 7 / 10

Midas Touch - ShirPan

Midas Touch by ShirPan

OVERVIEW

Deep industrial drum and bass sounds in abundance with a sinister presence, and some heavy breaks to match, this track delivers darkness at it's finest.

MIXDOWN

Throughout the intro the mixdown is perfect, everything sounds so heavy and clear it's almost ridiculous! Once it drops I noticed some muddyness around the 500hz area. Although it really isnt that much of a dilemma, if anything I think it's due to the heavy drum break ShirPan has under his main drum beat. A problem easily rectified. Apart from that, this track punches harder than a heavyweight! Dynamics are nice, as I feel "Consumed" by all the elements.

ORIGINALITY

There are some real original sounds in this, some of which I never expected to work with each other, but ShirPan has made them all work wonderfully well. The halftime swithups work great and keep the track from going stale. As far as a genre goes, I wouldnt like to classify this into one singular catagory as it has influences from a vast array of genre's.

SOUND DESIGN

The bass design in this track is pretty darn good if you ask me! It's deep, yet gritty, morphing yet sturdy! I'm really impressed with the sounds created in this track, and they all hit hard too! The atmospheres all help with the emotion of the track and also help to push the drops on our ears like an assault to the death! Great design!

STRUCTURE

A very solid structure to the track, and very DJ friendly (as long as you're not trying to mix when the halftime beat hits) It creates a journey from start to finish, with absolutely no hiccups along the way.

Searching - Suburban Filth

Searching by Suburban Filth

OVERVIEW

This liquid drum and bass roller has an early sunday morning feel to it. Not that heavy that you need to still be throwing your arms around like a drowning child, but not that relaxed you are drifting off to a land of make believe.

MIXDOWN

The mixdown on this track sounds pretty clean, all elements of the track sit nicely in their own rightous space and nothing noticably collides on the frequency spectrum. I believe the dynamics of the track could have been "fuller". It sounds like it's coming straight at me from the same direction, not engulfing me as much as I would have liked it to.

ORIGINALITY

How original can a liquid drum and bass roller really be? It's a sub genre of Drum and Bass that has stood the test of time for obvious reasons. People that love this style love it because of the moving pads / strings, the melodic piano's and the deep rolling reece basses that we have become accustomed to hearing. And this track is no exception. It delivers the beautiful basics in all their glory! Is it the most original liquid drum and bass track? no. Does it deliver everything we know and love about the sub genre? Hell yes!

SOUND DESIGN

As I touched upon above, the sounds are not the most original, and most of the sounds used could probably be found in various sample packs and presets of instruments. That being said, the reece bass is one of the smoothest I've heard in a long time, and the synth / piano hits work really well together.
The drums sound fairly punchy, but for me they are just lacking a little dynamic range. They sound quite narrow right now.

STRUCTURE

It's a solidly structured track, no random sudden dropouts, or glitchy breaks that could destroy a DJ's mix. It has the generic 16 -32 bar change ups drops etc that all DJ's need to be able to mix the tracks they do. Everything sits properly in the structure of the track and it leads us nicely from beginning to end without fault.

Welcome - Introduction

Hi there, my name is Tony, I go under the artist name of Kronix. I am an electronic music producer who specialises in Drum and Bass, Dubstep and Electro. Here are a couple of examples of my work

So, now the introduction is out of the way, I'll tell you why I'm here.  Over the coming month's / years, I'm going to offer an in depth reviewing system for any up and coming producers within my specialised genre's. Focusing on various sections such as mixdown, originality, sound design, structure, and many more.
My aim is to give real feedback for those who want it. I've experienced many forums where people crave in depth feedback, but most of the time, your tracks will slip off the page, and only if you are lucky will you recieve a "Nice track" comment. Which, let's be honest, is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot!

My reviewing is 100% free and non-biased. It is also honest, so if you send me something that's utter junk, I'll tell you so.  All tracks and reviews will be published publicly and anyone can comment on the track and review, so if you do not agree with something I have said, you will have your chance to put me in my place! Obviously any reviews I give can only be an accumulation of my own personal thoughts, and I do not expect everyone to have the same feelings as I do.

Over time I am also going to review various VST Plugins and FX Plugins, again giving in-depth thoughts on ease of use, durability, pricing structure and results.

So that's it! That's me, thats why I'm here, and hopefully, fingers crossed, this is the sort of thing you all want to keep updated on?

Oh yeah, one more thing! If you would like to be one of the first to have your track reviewed there are a few ways you can get it to me.

email - email your track (320mbps only) to dnbdimenzions@aim.com with the title of Track Review. Any other title name may be skipped over by myself this end!
